RNC Chair: Democrats Don’t Want to Discuss Menendez Trial

Ronna Romney McDaniel accused Democrats of hiding from their colleague's misdeeds.

Republican National Committee (RNC) Chair Ronna Romney McDaniel said Democrats are hiding in an attempt to avoid facing questions about the bribery charges against Sen. Bob Menendez (D-NJ) during an interview on the Hugh Hewitt Show Wednesday.

Host Mark Davis asked McDaniel about a petition to demand Menendez’s resignation.

“We’re already seeing Democrats hide from this issue. Menendez is obviously under trial right now. He is in his fifth day being accused of using his Senate office to do favors for a high-dollar donor,” she responded. McDaniel then listed various offenses of which the New Jersey senator has been accused.

The RNC Chair then described the petition effort: “If he is convicted, Democrats need to stand with Republicans and ask for him to resign from the Senate, we cannot have a felon in the Senate. We are calling on Democrats to come out before the trial is over and say that if he is convicted, he should resign.”

However, McDaniel is not holding out much hope, saying, “So far most of them are hiding and ducking that question, and we are trying to put that pressure on them.”

Menendez is currently on trial in New Jersey on federal bribery charges related to his relationship with Florida ophthalmologist Salomon Melgen.
