Virginia Republican Ed Gillespie is getting a significant financial boost from national Republican groups in his effort to win the state’s governor’s race.

According to the Washington Times, the Republican National Committee (RNC) invested $5 million in Gillespie, while the Republican Governors Association (RGA) added another $10 million.

The money, according to the Times, has helped Gillespie, who ran for Senate in 2014 against Sen. Mark Warner (D-VA), narrow the gap with Lt. Gov. Ralph Northam (D-VA), who has received about $7.5 million from Democratic counterparts the DNC and DGA. But Northam has also received “massive assistance from liberal advocacy groups,” according to the Times.

And the money could be helping Gillespie. Observers say they see a more unified Republican Party in Virginia than they have in past cycles.

Former Rep. Tom Davis, Virginia Republican, said Mr. Gillespie has a more unified party in the state this year compared to the 2013 and 2014 races.

“I think there is some buyer’s remorse that Republicans didn’t put more into Gillespie last time,” Mr. Davis said, adding that the GOP also recognizes that its best bet of winning is in Virginia since New Jersey’s governorship is probably out of reach.

A Washington Post poll released Tuesday showed Gillespie narrowing the gap with Northam. That poll showed Northam leading Gillespie 49-44, but that same poll showed Northam up by 13 points earlier in October.
