Democrat Ralph Northam won the Virginia gubernatorial election on Tuesday night, a victory Democrats claim will translate to good things for the opposition party in 2018 and beyond.

But Northam couldn’t “even begin” his victory speech because of liberal, pro-sanctuary city protesters, according to The New York Times‘ Jonathan Martin. The protest was the clearest indication yet that the Democratic Party’s deep divisions have not yet healed.

The tweet pairs well with a story from BuzzFeed News, published on Tuesday night, that the Latino Victory Fund will double down on its controversial strategies after earning ire with their infamous ad that suggested Republicans like Gillespie want to run down non-white children with their trucks.

But the sanctuary cities issue did dog Northam, as NTK Network reported on Monday. Democracy For America, a progressive group, dropped their Northam support over his declared opposition to sanctuary cities.

The interruptions and the doubling down just mean that Democrats have more division than unity to look forward to, even after wins in 2017.
