2017 Chuck Schumer has threatened a government shutdown over President Trump’s border wall. 2013 Chuck Schumer said a Democrat-led shutdown over immigration would be “governmental chaos.”
On Monday, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) warned Republicans that he’s ready to shut down the government over President Trump’s border wall.
The threat from Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and other Democratic leaders sets up a climactic first showdown with the president, particularly with their inclusion of Trump’s signature border wall proposal.
“If Republicans insist on inserting poison pill riders such as defunding Planned Parenthood, building a border wall, or starting a deportation force, they will be shutting down the government and delivering a severe blow to our economy,” Schumer said in a statement.
It should come as no surprise that, in 2013, Schumer used apocalyptic language to describe the GOP-led government shutdown, calling Republicans “fanatics” and claiming the shutdown is an offer “to the right-wing gods.”
But 2013 Chuck Schumer warned 2017 Chuck Schumer about Democrats shutting down the government on this very issue, in an interview on ABC’s “This Week.”
Video (from 2:52 to 3:16) and partial transcript below:
SEN. CHUCK SCHUMER: Speaker Boehner comes in and he says, basically, it’s sorta like this. Someone goes into your house, takes your wife and children hostage, and then says ‘let’s negotiate over the price of your house.’ You know, we could do the same thing on immigration. We believe strongly in immigration reform. We could say ‘we’re shutting down the government, we’re not gonna raise the debt ceiling, until you pass immigration reform.’ It would be governmental chaos.“
2017 Chuck Schumer sure sounds different than 2013 Chuck Schumer on the prospect of a government shutdown.
