Schumer Threatens to Shut Down Government Because He Doesn’t Like the Negotiations

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) wants to torpedo a one-week spending bill because he doesn’t like how some of the negotiations are going.

It seems congressional Democrats come up with a new excuse to shut down the government every day. The latest? Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) may torpedo a one-week spending bill because he’s not a fan of the current negotiations with Republicans.

The Hill reported on Thursday:

Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) on Thursday objected to a deal on passing a one-week stopgap government funding bill, citing concerns about ongoing negotiations over a larger spending agreement.

Schumer said there were still unresolved “poison pill riders” being worked out on a longer spending deal that would fund the government through Sept. 30.

Schumer’s comments on the one-week bill suggest he’s ready to stop negotiating a deal to keep the government open altogether. Eight Democrats need to join the 52 Republican senators to pass a continuing resolution (CR) to fund the government, whether for one more week or through September.

On Thursday, Schumer felt uneasy about House Democrats’ plans to shut down the government if the GOP tries to do anything to Obamacare. It seems he has not lost his enthusiasm for a potential shutdown, though, with this latest move.
