Sen. Grassley Calls Out Senate Democrats and Their Hypocrisy Over ‘Dark Money’

Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA) called out Senate Democrats for their hypocrisy regarding the use of “dark money” in politics during his opening remarks at the Senate Judiciary Committee’s hearing on Judge Neil Gorsuch Supreme Court nomination on Monday.

“To hear my friends on the other side tell it, it is only conservative outside groups who are engaged in the nomination process. But we all know that isn’t true,” Grassley told the committee.

“It is no secret that there are dozens of advocacy groups on the left who get involved in the nomination process, and there is absolutely nothing, nothing whatsoever wrong with that. We call it free speech.”

Grassley cited examples of outside groups previously getting involved in the nomination process for liberal Supreme Court justices whom they supported.

“Liberal billionaires like Tom Steyer [and] George Soros fund their own dark money organization[s] like NexGen Climate, a group that describes Judge Gorsuch as ‘an extreme candidate wrong for the Supreme Court,'” Grassley said.

“Everyone in this room knows that liberal and progressive groups have been pressuring the minority leader to find a reason, any reason, to filibuster a nominee.”

Previously Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) had attacked Gorsuch during the Senate Judiciary Committee’s confirmation hearing over conservative outside groups getting involved in the nomination fight. Whitehouse both failed to mention his own ties to “dark money,” while simultaneously dismissing the notion that liberal groups were also participating in the nomination process.
