Moments before Donald Trump’s nominee for Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin’s opening statement, Sen. Pat Roberts (R-KS) joked he had a Valium pill for Sen. Ron Wyden (D-OR) the ranking member of the committee, who appeared rather worked up at the beginning of the hearing.
Mnuchin’s confirmation hearing is expected to be one of the most contentious given Mnuchin’s involvement in the 2008 housing crisis.
“Just another suggestion, sir, we’ve got a lot of colleagues waiting: if you could be brief, it would be helpful,” an irritated Wyden responded to Roberts’ offer
Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) became particular upset about Roberts joke, “I just can’t quite belive that he would say that to a distinguished Senator from Oregon.”
“I think just a little pinprick of humor might help this committee from time to time,” Roberts said to Brown.
