The House Speaker delivered a powerful speech on the House floor in response to the shooting in Alexandria.
House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI) delivered a powerful speech to the members of the House of Representatives in response to the shooting in Alexandria on Wednesday.
“An attack on one of us is an attack on all of us,” Ryan said, receiving a standing ovation from the packed House chamber.
“We are united,” he said. “We are united in our shock. We are united in our anguish.”
Ryan praised the heroic actions of Capitol Police officers, Special Agents David Bailey and Krystal Griner, in the wake of their response to the attack.
Bailey and Griner, both wounded in the attack, managed to take down the shooter despite their injuries.
“This House wants to state unequivocally that we are as ever awed by the tremendous bravery of the Capitol Police.”
Ryan also said that a moment that Congress should keep in their memories for years to come is an image of Democratic members praying for their Republican colleagues.
The Speaker asked the House chamber “to come together” in the face of the attack.
“It is [our] humanity which will win the day, and it always will,” Ryan concluded.
