While Democrats gloat over wins in Virginia and New Jersey Wednesday, a look at their party’s national image should give leaders pause.

According to CNN, only 37 percent of Americans have a favorable opinion of Democrats, while 54 percent have an unfavorable opinion. That’s the highest unfavorable mark for Democrats ever recorded by CNN, dating back to 1992.

The rating includes low favorable ratings from some core Democratic groups, including nonwhites (48%) and people under 35 years old (33%). The numbers come amid recent feuds and divisions in the Democratic Party, as former interim chair Donna Brazile’s new book has unveiled new questions about infighting during the 2016 presidential campaign.

The Democrats’ favorability rating has taken a hit just in 2017 alone. The same poll found 44 percent of Americans had a favorable view of Democrats in March, a drop of seven percentage points in about a nine-month span.

Another problem on the horizon for Democrats is enthusiasm. Since March, Democratic enthusiasm about the 2018 midterms has dropped significantly, perhaps reflecting a simmering of the anti-Trump boil that erupted after his inauguration.

There are more warning signs for Democrats in this poll. Overall, 36% of registered voters who identify as Democrats or Democratic-leaning independents say they are extremely or very enthusiastic about voting next year, down from 44% who said so in September.
