This Liberal California Lawmaker is Challenging Dianne Feinstein

Kevin de Leon, California’s State Senate leader, announced Sunday he’s going to challenge Dianne Feinstein, one of the most powerful Democrats in Washington.

California’s U.S. Senate race just got a lot more interesting. On Sunday, president pro tempore of the California State Senate, Kevin de Leon (D-Los Angeles), announced he will challenge one of the most powerful Democrats in Washington, D.C., Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA).

The announcement sets up what will undoubtedly become a bruising primary between de Leon, 50, and Feinstein, 84. Interestingly, the two share many of the same policy positions, which could make de Leon’s challenge more personal.

Feinstein and de León aren’t far apart on most policies. Where de León is hoping to distinguish himself most from Feinstein is his anti-Trump creds. When he announced his run in an email to supporters, he literally accused the president of not having a soul.

Liberals have taken issue with Feinstein for not sufficiently “standing up” to President Trump.

In August, she said Trump could learn to be a “good president.” Liberal audiences were apoplectic about the remark. That same month she said it was “fair” to look at lowering the corporate tax rate, another issue that set off progressives and liberals. She offered praise for Trump chief of staff John Kelly, voted for Trump’s pick to lead the FBI, and admitted that Obama Attorney General Loretta Lynch’s private meeting with Bill Clinton during the heat of the 2016 election made her feel “queasy.”

Enter de Leon, who will likely run a campaign that is reflexively anti-Trump no matter the issue. Will it be enough to defeat Feinstein? That remains to be seen. But at least one new super PAC hopes so.

A Progressive California released this new video today, signaling it will back de Leon’s bid to unseat Feinstein:

Stay tuned for more Democrat-on-Democrat violence ahead in the Golden State.
