Secretary of State Rex Tillerson delivered a harsh message to Moscow over last week’s Syrian chemical attack at the G7 meeting in Italy on Tuesday.
“Russia has failed to uphold the agreements that had been entered into under multiple U.N. Security Council Resolutions,” Tillerson said.
Tillerson pointed out that Russia had committed to eliminating Syria’s chemcial weapons stockpile, but Moscow had failed to live up to this responsibility.
“It is unclear whether Russia failed to take this obligation seriously or Russia has been incompenent,” Tillerson said. “But this distinction doesn’t much matter to the dead.”
Tillerson also expressed hope that a future political solution to the Syrian civil war will not include Bashar al-Assad.
The Associated Press reported yesterday that Russian military forces were surveilling the area of the chemical attack prior to and during its execution. A “Russian-made” warplane then bombed the local hospital, in an apparent attempt to cover up the war crime.
