Thawing relations between the U.S. and Russia has been put back on ice according to remarks President Trump made during an interview with Fox Business Network Wednesday.
Trump, previously averse to criticizing Russian President Vladimir Putin, slammed the Kremlin over its support of the Assad regime in Syria.
“Frankly, Putin is backing a person that’s truly an evil person,” Trump said. “I think it’s very bad for Russia.”
Trump called Putin’s actions “bad for mankind” and “bad for this world.”
“If Russia didn’t go in and back this animal,” Trump said, referring to Assad, “you wouldn’t have a problem right now.”
Trump pointed out that Assad stood on the verge of defeat before Russia intervened in the civil war that has lasted more than 6 years.
Earlier Wednesday, Putin criticized Trump in turn, saying that relations between the United States and Russia have “not improved but [have] rather deteriorated” with Trump in the White House.
