Trump: Health Care Relief Coming By “Power of the Pen”

The president previewed a possible executive order on Tuesday morning that press reports suggest would allow consumers to purchase health insurance across state lines.

Trump executive order

President Trump tweeted on Tuesday that he will use his “power of the pen” to “give great HealthCare to many people,” previewing an executive order that media reported on earlier this week.

The executive order, if The Associated Pressreport on Trump’s coming action is accurate, would allow Americans to purchase health insurance across state lines.

The White House is finalizing an executive order that would expand health plans offered by associations to allow individuals to pool together and buy insurance outside their states, a unilateral move that follows failed efforts by Congress to overhaul the health care system.

…Under the president’s executive action, membership groups could sponsor insurance plans that cost less because — for example — they wouldn’t have to offer the full menu of benefits required under the Affordable Care Act, also called “Obamacare.” It’s unclear how the White House plans to overcome opposition from state insurance regulators, who see that as an end-run to avoid standards.

In essence, consumers in these associations would have less benefits than Obamacare mandates, but they would also likely access health insurance at a lower price.

As The Associated Press alluded to, Trump has long been fixated with getting rid of the “lines around the states.”
