The president is putting pressure on red state Democrats to push his agenda through.
President Trump urged a Missouri crowd on Wednesday to vote out Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-MO) if she did not vote to reform the country’s complex tax code.
“[Other countries] are taking us, frankly, to the cleaners, so we must, we have no choice,” Trump said. “We must lower our taxes.”
“Your senator, Claire McCaskill, she must do this for you, and if she doesn’t do it for you, you have to vote her out of office,” he told the crowd.
The president then slammed Democrats as a whole. “We just can’t do this anymore with the obstruction and the obstructionists,” he said. Trump called on Democrats to join in on the process and avoid obstructing reform like they have on “administration appointments and health care.”
Trump warned that the current tax code could suffocate economic growth.
The policy speech and pressure Trump is putting on senators in their home states indicates that the president is pursuing a different strategy from the health care fight in his effort to advocate for tax reform.
