Trump: Insurance Companies’ ‘Gravy Train’ is Over

The president said that insurance companies were pocketing hundreds of millions of dollars a month in government handouts.

President Trump, speaking to reporters prior to a Cabinet meeting Monday, expressed pride in last week’s decision to end cost-sharing reduction (CSR) payments, saying that the “gravy train” going to health insurance companies had ended.

“And the gravy train ended the day I knocked out the insurance companies’ money, which was last week. Hundreds of millions of dollars a month handed to the insurance companies for very little reason,” Trump said.

The president also accused politicians, especially Democrats, of representing the interests of insurance companies, rather than the people of the United States.

“You look at the Democrats. Take a look at that. Take a look at how much money has been spent by the Democrats and by the health companies and by the health companies on politicians generally. But take a look at the coffers of the Democrats,” he said.

Trump added that his ending of CSR payments could force Democrats and Republicans to come up with a bipartisan fix to health care.
