The president said it was a “lucky word.”
President Trump expressed pleasure at South Korean President Moon Jae-In’s use of the word “deplorable” in a speech to the United Nations on Thursday.
Meeting with Moon later on Thursday, Trump let the president know how pleased he was.
“I’m very happy you used the word, ‘deplorable,'” Trump said, to laughter.
“I promise I did not tell them to use that word,” he told the media.
Trump joked that the word was “a very lucky word for me and millions of people.”
Trump’s 2016 opponent was caught at a fundraiser decrying the then-candidate’s supporters as a “basket of deplorables.”
