Trump Supports Keeping Confederate Monuments

The president tweeted that he regarded efforts to remove the statues as “sad.”

President Trump announced on Twitter on Thursday that he opposed the removal of Confederate monuments.

According to a new Marist poll out Thursday, most Americans agree with the president’s stance. Sixty-two percent of all Americans, including 44 percent of Democrats, support keeping the monuments.

The New York Times published a list of Confederate monuments that have or are in the process of being taken down. FiveThirtyEight reported Wednesday that there are still more than 700 publicly displayed Confederate monuments in the United States.
