Trump’s November Surprise: The Election’s Rigged

Is Donald Trump seeking to prebut November’s results by suggesting the results will be rigged by voter fraud?

Under fire for his alleged conduct with women over the years, Donald Trump has picked a new issue of focus leading up to November’s election: voter fraud.

In a Monday morning tweet storm, Trump asserted that “[o]f course there is large scale voter fraud”:

Trump’s assertion of a rigged election creates tension with his running mate, Gov. Mike Pence (R-IN), who on Sunday asserted that the election results will be legitimate:

“We will absolutely accept the result of the election,” Republican vice presidential nominee Mike Pence said on NBC’s Meet The Press Sunday. “Look, the American people will speak in an election that will culminate on November the 8th. But the American people are tired of the obvious bias in the national media.”

Trump’s voter fraud claims have been the subject of pushback from a Republican election lawyer, and an independent analysis that identified 31 voter fraud incidents out of 1 billion cast votes.

Still, some voters believe Trump’s claims: a Politico/Morning Consult poll released Monday morning found 41 percent of voters — 73 percent of Republicans and 17 percent of Democrats — believe there could be massive voter fraud.
