VA-Gov Race in Dead Heat With Less Than a Month to Go

Republican Ed Gillespie has closed the gap on Democrat Ralph Northam.

Three new polls of the Virginia gubernatorial race show a dead heat between Republican Ed Gillespie and Democratic Lieutenant Governor Ralph Northam, with less than a month to go in the race.

One poll shows Gillespie up by one in the race, while two others show Northam leading but Gillespie still within the margin of error.

Northam led Gillespie by a comfortable margin before the Tuesday release, but the new RealClearPolitics polling average shows a 3.5-point race. Earlier polls predicted a double-digit win for the lieutenant governor, but that lead disappeared.

The race’s results will widely be interpreted as a foreshadowing of the 2018 midterms and a review of President Trump’s first year in office.

The president himself has promoted Gillespie’s candidacy with his Twitter account:

Trump’s support may have given the Republican candidate a bump. As the race enters the home stretch, Gillespie appears to have the momentum.
