Virginia Lieutenant Governor and candidate for governor, Ralph Northam, endorsed state distribution of driver’s licenses for illegal immigrants at a rally supporting a minimum wage increase Thursday.
Asked by a reporter if he supported the initiative, Northam said, “We need to make sure that we have immigration reform for this country. We need to make sure that we have a pathway to citizenship in the Commonwealth of Virginia, and we need to make sure that people have access to driver’s licenses.”
Northam’s comments came at a rally in front of the Virginia State Capitol supporting a raise in the minimum wage and the driver’s license initiative. California issued 800,000 driver’s licenses to illegal immigrants in the first two years following its introduction of the same policy, according to The Mercury News.
