Dan Balz of The Washington Post pressed Democratic National Committee (DNC) Chair Tom Perez on his hypocritical stance on Neil Gorsuch’s nomination to the Supreme Court Monday, at a Post Live discussion.
“In January, Vice President Biden said, ‘No one is required to vote on the nominee, but they are required, in my view, required to give the nominee a hearing and a vote,'” Balz read to Perez.
“Well he certainly got a hearing. We just had a hearing, and we’re about to have a vote on cloture,” Perez responded.
Balz corrected Perez, “That’s different than a vote.”
Unable to come back, Perez pivoted, criticizing Gorsuch for being “far outside the mainstream of American thinking.”
According to FiveThirtyEight, Gorsuch enjoys a 50 percent approval rating, compared to a 31 percent disapproval rating. Conversely, only 35 percent of Americans view Hillary Clinton, Perez’s pick for president in 2016, favorably, compared with 55 percent unfavorable.
Senate Democrats have threatened to perform an unprecedented filibuster of Gorsuch’s nomination and to refuse to grant cloture on the confirmation.
