As more sensational stories have overtaken the Russian investigation this summer, the special counsel has been quietly been working behind the scenes.
Hurricane Harvey, deadly violence in Charlottesville, and North Korea have dominated headlines in recent months. But behind all the noise, Special Counsel Robert Mueller has quietly continued his investigation into connections between the Trump campaign and the Russian government.
Despite the relative media silence, there have been some big developments in the investigation. Here are some you may have missed:
IRS now involved: The Internal Revenue Service (IRS)’s Criminal Investigations unit is now assisting Mueller’s investigation, according to a report from The Daily Beast. Remember Trump’s refusal to release his tax returns? The IRS could assist Mueller in obtaining the president’s financial records.
Manafort in jeopardy?: Reports have emerged that the investigation has lasered in on Trump’s former campaign manager, Paul Manafort, and possible money laundering. Manafort formerly worked for pro-Russian factions in Ukraine, giving him close connections to the Kremlin. His time working for pro-Kremlin forces could come back to haunt him.
Trump under investigation: Former FBI Director James Comey had previously informed Trump that he was not under investigation, but the director’s firing has changed that. Mueller is now investigating Trump for obstruction of justice, due to circumstances surrounding Comey’s dismissal.
