On Friday, President-elect Donald Trump spoke with Taiwanese President Tsai Ying-wen on the phone, a decision that left many pundits confused as it puts the United States’ relationship with China in a rough spot.
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said in a statement regarding the call, “The ‘one China’ policy is the cornerstone of a healthy China-U.S. relationship. I hope this political foundation won’t be disrupted or damaged.”
CNN’s Fareed Zakaria, though, said that Trump’s decision to call President Tsai Ying-wen was “not a bad idea.”
“I think people are getting overly critical. The truth of the matter is we need leverage with China. China is a country that cooperates with the United States on many issues, but on many issues we need to be able to push them harder,” Zakaria told CNN’s Alisyn Camerota
