16 House Dems Sign Letter Opposing Pelosi As Leader of Democratic Caucus

A group of 16 House Democrats sent a letter to their colleagues on Monday stating they “believe more strongly than ever that the time has come for new leadership” in the Democratic caucus. They added that they will not support House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi’s (D-CA) bid to be speaker on the House on the floor, either.

This is just the latest challenge to Pelosi’s leadership of the Democratic caucus.

“As we head toward the 116th Congress and reclaim our Democratic Majority, we believe more strongly than ever that the time has come for new leadership in our Caucus,” they wrote.

“We are thankful to Leader Pelosi for her years of service to our Country and to our Caucus,” they continued. “However, we also recognize that in this recent election, Democrats ran and won on a message of change.”

The members continued that the new Democratic majority is thanks to those candidates and members who ran on the message of change.

“Therefore, we are committed to voting for new leadership in both our Caucus meeting and on the House Floor,” they conclude.

The Washington Post‘s Mike DeBonis tweeted out the letter:

The letter was signed by the following 16 Democrats:

Rep. Elect Anthony Brindisi (D-NY)
Rep. Jim Cooper (D-TN)
Rep. Elect Joe Cunningham (D-SC)
Rep. Bill Foster (D-IL)
Rep. Brian Higgins (D-NY)
Rep. Stephen Lynch (D-MA)
Rep. Elect Ben McAdams (D-UT)
Rep. Seth Moulton (D-MA)
Rep. Ed Perlmutter (D-CO)
Rep. Kathleen Rice (D-NY)
Rep. Elect Max Rose (D-NY)
Rep. Tim Ryan (D-OH)
Rep. Linda Sanchez (D-CA)
Rep. Kurt Schrader (D-OR)
Rep. Elect Jeff Van Drew (D-NJ)
Rep. Filemon Vela (D-TX)

It should be noted that Rep.-Elect Ben McAdams (D-UT) is currently trailing Rep. Mia Love (R-UT) by 1,516 votes.

If those results hold, and this is the only opposition to Pelosi’s leadership, it would mean that Pelosi could still be narrowly elected speaker in January.
