174 House Democrats Just Voted to Shut Down the Government … Again

If it were up to House Democrats, the vote to continue funding the government would have failed. House Republicans got the continuing resolution (CR) over the finish line.

174 House Democrats Just Voted to Shut Down the Government … Again

Almost every House Democrat – 174 of 193 – effectively voted to shut down the government on Tuesday, with an overwhelming majority voting against a continuing resolution (CR) to fund the government through late March.

NTK Network covered the deal on Tuesday. It would fund most of the government through March 23, but the military for a full year. It would also fund community health centers, a key priority for Democrats, for two years.

Still, the final roll call vote, 245-182, went like this:

  • Republicans: 228 “Yeas,” eight “Nays,” one not voting
  • Democrats: 17 “Yeas,” 174 “Nays,” two not voting

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), unsurprisingly, voted against the bill that would keep the government open.

Here’s how CQ explained the vote:

Frelinghuysen, R-N.J., motion to concur in the Senate amendment to the bill with an amendment that would provide for an extension of the current continuing resolution through March 23, 2018. The measure would provide for $659.2 billion in discretionary funding for the Defense Department through fiscal 2018 and would provide $3.6 billion annually for community health centers through fiscal 2019.

It seems Democrats, though, don’t have an interest in keeping government open in 2018, unless it’s on all of their terms.
