The Arizona Senate race was expected to be very competitive, even before incumbent Republican Sen. Jeff Flake (R-AZ) announced he would not be seeking re-election.

WHO, WHAT, WHERE, WHEN: With Flake announcing he would not be seeking re-election in 2018, the Republican primary is expected to be a proxy war between Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) and Breitbart’s Steve Bannon.

Former State Senator Kelli Ward, who planned on challenging Flake in the Republican primary before he announced his retirement, has already received Bannon’s endorsement.

Ward has made controversial comments in the past regarding Sen. John McCain’s (R-AZ) health and is seen as an outsider by establishment Republicans.

Other potential Republican candidates include Reps. Martha McSally and Andy Biggs.

There are about a half-dozen Democrats running in the Democratic primary, but Rep. Kyrsten Sinema (D-AZ) is considered to be the front-runner to win the party’s nomination.

WHY IT MATTERS: With Flake’s retirement, the Arizona Senate race is wide open with political handicappers considering the race to be a “toss-up,” and pundits predict a contentious Republican primary in 2018.

President Donald Trump narrowly won Arizona over Hillary Clinton in 2016.

Factoring in Trump’s narrow victory and the possibility of a contentious Republican primary, Democrats might see Arizona as their best chance at flipping a red state to blue in 2018.
