18 Races to Watch in 2018: California’s 10th Congressional District

The path for Democrats to retake the House of Representatives goes through California, as the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) is targeting seven congressional districts in the state, including California’s 10th.

WHO, WHAT, WHERE, WHEN: Republican Rep. Jeff Denham (R-CA) has represented California’s 10th Congressional District since 2010.

In 2016, Denham won his reelection campaign by three points, the same margin that Hillary Clinton won the district by.

The Democratic field is crowded, featuring eight declared candidates. Josh Harder, a Turlock, CA native, leads the pack with $511,691 cash on hand through September 30, 2017. However, Denham has more than double the cash on hand compared to what his Democratic opponents have reported, combined.

WHY IT MATTERS: The DCCC strategy to retake the House in 2018 hinges on flipping congressional districts Hillary Clinton won in 2016, meaning they need to succeed in places like California’s 10th.

A crowded Democratic primary could result in a far-left candidate being nominated to challenge Denham, which may not play well in the conservative-leaning California 10th, which elected Denham by 13 points in 2014, the last midterm election.
