18 Races to Watch in 2018: Florida Senate Race

The competitiveness of the Florida Senate race will depend primarily on whether incumbent Republican Gov. Rick Scott (R-FL) decides to challenge incumbent Democratic Sen. Bill Nelson (D-FL) in 2018.

WHO, WHAT, WHEN, WHERE: Sen. Nelson was first elected to the United States Senate in 2000 and won re-election in 2006 and 2012 by wide margins over his Republican opponents.

Republicans’ hopes of flipping Nelson’s seat from blue to red hinge entirely on Scott entering the race, which many political pundits expect Scott to do.

WHY IT MATTERS: This Senate race could be an unexpected gift for Republicans if Scott decides to enters the race.

Political pundits predict that if Scott enters the race, it will quickly become one of the most competitive and expensive Senate races of 2018.

Scott has the ability to spend millions of his own money on the race, and a recent poll showed Scott leading by double digits Nelson in a hypothetical matchup.

This double-digit lead over Nelson was primarily attributed to Florida’s economic growth under Scott, and Scott’s handling of the difficult hurricane season that Florida encountered in 2017.

The Cook Political Report has this raced listed as “lean democratic.”
