18 Races To Watch In 2018: Indiana Senate Race

Who, What, Where, When: The incumbent Democratic Senator Joe Donnelly is up for re-election for the first time since winning the seat in 2012.

Currently, the Republican field is crowded, featuring half a dozen declared candidates including two sitting Members of Congress Luke Messer and Todd Rokita.

Important Date: May 8, 2018, is when the Indiana Republican Party’s primary will take place.

Outside Factor: Indiana is the home state of Vice President Mike Pence, who previously served as Governor of Indiana and as a congressman.

Pence will be able to help the eventual Republican nominee by providing both fundraising assistance and access to his political network in the state.

Why It Matters: Donnelly defeated his Republican opponent Richard Mourdock in 2012 by just six points, and observers attribute his victory, in part, to controversial comments Mourdock made during an October debate regarding rape.

Before Mourdock’s controversial comment, the 2012 Indiana Senate Race was locked in a dead heat, according to pollsters.

Republicans now believe that they have a good chance of flipping the seat, given Trump’s popularity in Indiana and Pence’s deep ties to the state.

The Cook Political Report, has the 2018 Indiana Senate race listed is a “toss-up,” and political pundits consistently have placed the race on their lists of Senate races to watch next year.
