18 Races to Watch in 2018: Nebraska’s 2nd Congressional District

The race to represent Nebraska’s 2nd Congressional District in 2018 will likely feature a rematch of the 2016 election between incumbent Rep. Don Bacon (R-NE) and former Rep. Brad Ashford (D-NE), and is expected to be a close contest.

The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) already listed Nebraska’s 2nd as a race they will be targeting in 2018.

WHO, WHAT, WHERE, WHEN: Rep. Bacon is up for reelection for the first time after narrowly defeating Ashford by 2 points in 2016.

Ashford announced in June that he would run against Kara Eastman, the president of a nonprofit, in the Democratic primary in 2018.

Bacon has $488,000 cash on hand, compared to just $104,000 cash on hand for Ashford, which amounts to a significant fundraising advantage for Bacon.

WHY IT MATTERS: Nebraska’s 2nd Congressional District has consistently been one of the most competitive districts in the country. Former President Barack Obama won the district by one point in 2008, while President Trump won the district by two points in 2016.

Given how competitive the district is, the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) listed it among the districts they were targeting in 2016. Now the DCCC is hoping the expected Democratic wave will help flip the seat back.

The Cook Political Report has the race listed as a “toss up.”
