The 2018 Ohio Senate race will likely feature a rematch of the 2012 Ohio Senate race between incumbent Democratic Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) and Republican Ohio State Treasurer Josh Mandel, but that doesn’t mean the outcome will be the same.

Brown defeated Mandel in 2012 by 5 points, but in 2016, President Trump defeated Hillary Clinton by 8 points.

WHO, WHAT, WHERE, WHEN: Brown was first elected to the United States Senate in 2006 and won his re-election campaign against Mandel in 2012.

The Republican field features about a half-dozen candidates. The leading contender to win the Republican primary is Mandel. Investment banker Michael Gibbons is a candidate that some political pundits believe could challenge Mandel in the Republican primary.

WHY IT MATTERS: Brown is the only Democrat to win a statewide election in Ohio in 10 years, and since Brown’s last election, Ohio has turned more and more red, highlighted by Trump’s 8-point victory in 2016.

Brown’s supporters believe that his “unique mix of anti-trade, pro-union politics fits the state’s Trump-friendly profile.” However, “some Democrats say the state’s pro-Trump Appalachia region will be a force for Brown to reckon with.”

Political pundits consistently rank the Ohio Senate race as one to watch in 2018, and The Cook Political Report has the race listed as “Leans Democratic.”
