18 Races to Watch in 2018: Pennsylvania Governor’s Race

Republicans will have a competitive primary to challenge Gov. Tom Wolf (D-PA), and the Republican Governors Association (RGA) is eyeing the state as a potential pick-up opportunity.

WHO, WHAT, WHERE, WHEN: After defeating Gov. Tom Corbett’s (R-PA) re-election bid in 2014, Wolf will face re-election to win a second term as the head of Pennsylvania’s executive branch.

But first, he will have to get past a solid field of Republican candidates. The Speaker of the State House, Mike Turzai (R-Bradford Woods), businessman Paul Mango, State Senator Scott Wagner (R-York), and attorney Laura Ellsworth are all running to challenge Wolf.

The only poll of the primary, an internal poll from Wagner’s campaign, shows the Steve Bannon-endorsed Wagner with a commanding lead over Mango. Turzai had not entered the race at the time of the poll.

WHY IT MATTERS: Republicans control a record number of governorships, and the 2018 midterms will give them a chance to expand their lead. Perpetual budget fights with the state legislature have hammered Wolf’s approval rating.

A local Pennsylvania ABC station’s survey found that only 35 percent of Pennsylvanians think Wolf deserves re-election.

Despite the low ratings however, the Cook Political Report rates this race as “Lean D.”
