18 Races to Watch in 2018: The 2018 Connecticut Gubernatorial Election

Connecticut is widely viewed as a deep-blue state by the public, and not a place you would typically expect to find a competitive governor’s race.

But given the unpopularity of incumbent Gov. Dan Malloy (D-CT), the state’s financial difficulties, and gains Republicans have made in the state house, Connecticut might be Republicans’ best chance to flip a blue state red in 2018.

WHO, WHAT, WHERE, WHY: Malloy’s unpopularity was highlighted in a recent Morning Consult poll, which ranked him as the second-most unpopular governor in America. Malloy announced during the summer that he will not seek re-election in 2018.

Given the incumbent Democratic governor’s unpopularity, a dozen Republicans have either announced that they will be running for governor in 2018 or are exploring a possible run.

Mark Boughton, the mayor of Danbury, and Mark Lauretti, the mayor of Shelton, who both had previously run for governor, are both running again in 2018.

The Democratic field is far less crowded, with only two candidates having formally declared including mayor of Middletown Dan Drew.

WHY IT MATTERS: The 2018 gubernatorial election will have far-reaching consequences, as the person elected will oversee the redistricting process that will begin after the 2020 census.

Republicans are at something of a disadvantage, as they will be defending 26 governorships in 2018, and only have a handful of chances to flip a Democratic state.

Factoring in the incumbent Democratic governor’s unpopularity in the state and recent gains made by Republicans in the state houses, political pundits have this 2018 gubernatorial race listed as a “toss up.”
