Two Democrats with national profiles separately confirmed their interest in 2020 presidential runs on Tuesday night.

Former Attorney General Eric Holder, an ally of ex-President Obama, told MSNBC’s Chris Hayes “[y]eah, I’m thinking about it,” when asked if he’s running for president.

And Sen. Jeff Merkley (D-OR) received a glowing write-up in The Hill, on his ‘quiet’ efforts to “[make] clear to liberal advocacy groups that he’s available for a 2020 bid.”

Merkley’s interest, though, seems contingent on both Sens. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) and Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) taking a pass on a run.

It’s unclear what Holder’s constituency in a 2020 run would be, though. While he certainly has liberal chops – especially with his latest redistricting project – he can’t run from the “establishment” label as an attorney general from the Obama administration.

Merkley and Holder are not household names and would not enter the presidential race as frontrunners. Then again, the 2016 Republican presidential nominee, and current president, Donald Trump, was anything but a frontrunner when he first jumped in the race.
