#2 Senate Dem Endorses Shutdown Over DREAMers … Is Schumer Next?

Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL), the second-ranking Senate Democrat and deputy to Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), endorsed some Democrats’ strategy to vote against any spending bill that does not address ‘DREAMers’ this December.

According to The Washington Post‘s Ed O’Keefe and Sean Sullivan:

Sen. Richard J. Durbin (D-Ill.), the second-ranking Senate Democrat and a lead negotiator on spending matters, said he is encouraging his colleagues to join him in blocking spending legislation if the legal status of “dreamers” isn’t resolved. President Trump announced in September that he will end the Obama-era Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program in early March, putting hundreds of thousands of dreamers — immigrants brought to the United States as children — at risk of deportation early next year.

“That’s my position. There’s too much at stake here. We can’t let this to slip into January, February with a March 5 deadline. It should be done, it can be done, easily, simply and quickly,” Durbin said in an interview.

Durbin echoes possible 2020 presidential candidate Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA), House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), and other Senate and House Democrats in voting against funding the government if President Trump and Republicans do not find a solution for hundreds of thousands of young, undocumented immigrants at risk of deportation next year.

Now that the #2 Senate Democrat is on board with the strategy, one big question remains: where does Schumer stand?

In 2013, he said shutting down the government over immigration “would be governmental chaos.”

That was when President Obama was in charge, though. Schumer’s allies seem more than willing to threaten a government shutdown now that a political adversary is in office. Will the New York Democrat follow suit?
