Several of the top Democratic presidential hopefuls have rushed to the defense of Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) after her latest ant-Semitic remarks.

Omar, who has a history of making anti-Semitic statements, made another one last week when she suggested that pro-Israel groups were pushing members of Congress to have “allegiance to a foreign country.”

The remarks have received condemnation from both sides of the political aisle, but progressive groups and some liberal members of the Democratic Party have rushed to Omar’s defense, including 2020 hopefuls.

“We all have a responsibility to speak out against anti-Semitism, Islamophobia, homophobia, transphobia, racism, and all forms of hatred and bigotry,” Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA) said in a statement. “But like some of my colleagues in the Congressional Black Caucus, I am concerned that the spotlight being put on Congresswoman Omar may put her at risk.”

Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) also released a statement defending Omar on Wednesday.

“Branding criticism of Israel as automatically anti-Semitic has a chilling effect on our public discourse and makes it harder to achieve a peaceful solution between Israelis and Palestinians,” Warren told The Hill.

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) said in a statement that Omar was being targeted.

“Anti-Semitism is a hateful and dangerous ideology which must be vigorously opposed in the United States and around the world. We must not, however, equate anti-Semitism with legitimate criticism of the right-wing, Netanyahu government in Israel. Rather, we must develop an even-handed Middle East policy which brings Israelis and Palestinians together for a lasting peace,” Sanders told The Hill in a statement.

“What I fear is going on in the House now is an effort to target Congresswoman Omar as a way of stifling that debate,” Sanders added. “That’s wrong.”
