Mayor Pete Buttigieg (D-IN) questioned whether America was even a democracy anymore during an interview with KCBS Radio on Wednesday just hours after he announced his intentions to run for the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination.

The host of KCBS asked Buttigieg what issues he was going to “hit the hardest,” to make him stand out in the crowded Democratic presidential primary.

“Well, my approach to the issues really revolves around three core values or ideas: freedom, security, and democracy,” Buttigieg said.

“When it comes to democracy, I think we’re at a moment when, frankly, we’re being tested on whether we are a democracy,” Buttigieg said. “I think we need to look at the Electoral College that makes it difficult for people in my home state of Indiana or yours in California to have a voice in presidential politics.”

Buttigieg then added that we need to look at statehood for the people living in Washington, D.C. and Puerto Rico.
