2020 Watch: Colorado’s Michael Bennet is Traveling to Iowa. Is He Running?

Sen. Michael Bennet (D-CO), the quiet senior senator from Colorado, is publicly mulling a run for president in 2020, and he’s traveling to Iowa to explore his viability, according to an Associated Press report.

Bennet, described by the AP as a “soft-spoken moderate,” plans to be in Iowa Feb. 22-23 “to engage with voters as he considers whether to enter the race for president,” according to his spokesman.

Bennet recently appeared on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” saying, “one more voice” in the presidential race could be a good thing for the country.

He also gained national attention for a fiery speech he gave on the Senate floor during the partial government shutdown last month. Bennet harshly criticized Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) for voting to pay Coast Guard members during the shutdown but not to reopen the government. He also blasted Cruz’s his involvement in the 2013 government shutdown.

“When the senator from Texas shut this government down in 2013, my state was flooded,” Bennet shouted. “People were killed. People’s houses were destroyed. Their small businesses were destroyed, forever.”

Bennet accused Cruz of crying “crocodile tears” this time around.

If Bennet decides to run for president, he’ll be joining quite a few of his Senate colleagues. To date, Sens. Kamala Harris (D-CA), Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY), Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), and Cory Booker (D-NJ) have all formally jumped into the race. Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) is also considering a run.
