2020 Watch: First Democratic Presidential Debate Is Just Months Away

The first debate for candidates seeking the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination is just months away, per a report published by Politico on Monday.

According to Politico:

“The kickoff debate could come as early as spring or summer 2019 — and the prospect of it is already accelerating the timetable for Democrats to raise money, hire staff and raise their profiles beyond an asterisk in national and early-state polls.”

“The reason? Any candidate who fails to qualify for the debate is likely doomed.”

This could likely be why 2020 presidential hopefuls like Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ) and Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA) in recent weeks have announced visits to Iowa. And Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) has been “spending heavily” on national digital advertising.

The Democratic National Committee (DNC) has not released details regarding how many candidates will be allowed on stage for the first Democratic primary debate or what the qualifications are to make it on the main debate stage.

What is clear from the 2016 Republican primary, which featured two debates because of the number of candidates seeking the party’s nomination, is that failing to make the main debate stage will be a death sentence for those candidates’ presidential hopes.
