2020 WATCH: Is De Blasio Growing a Mullet?

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio (D-NY), a possible 2020 presidential candidate, appears to be growing a mullet.

During a panel discussion on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” on Thursday, de Blasio was rocking the new hairstyle. Compared to a recent photograph of de Blasio at the U.S.-Mexico border, it’s apparent that he’s attempting to grow a mullet.

For those unfamiliar with the mullet, it is a “hairstyle, worn esp. by men, in which the hair is cut short at the front and sides, and left long at the back.”

The mullet became popular in the 1970s when rock stars like Rod Stewart and David Bowie rocked the cut. The hairstyle reached the height of its popularity in the 1980s.

The hairstyle has made something of a resurgence in recent years after Oklahoma State head football coach Mike Gundy started growing out a mullet in early 2017.

De Blasio wouldn’t be the first American politician to wear a mullet, though. Former President James Polk had a mullet while in Oval Office from 1845 to 1849. Most recently, former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty (R-MN) sported a mullet during his tenure in the governor’s mansion in the early 2000s.
