2020 Watch: Julián Castro is Launching a New PAC

Former U.S. Secretary of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Julián Castro may be taking the first steps ahead of a possible 2020 presidential run on Tuesday, when he officially launches a new political action committee (PAC) called Opportunity First.

Opportunity First will try to assist the Democratic Party’s efforts to retake the House of Representatives in 2018, by grooming young candidates.

The Texas Tribune reported:

“Castro’s PAC, Opportunity First, will have three aims: gaining Democratic control of the House, making headway in state legislatures ahead of the 2021 round of redistricting and electing younger leaders to local office.”

“To do this, the PAC will have an arm that is more traditional in focus, boosting the campaigns of candidates for the U.S. House of Representatives. The other side will support local, non-federal candidates.”

Launching a PAC is generally a first formal step a candidate will take before running for president. Political pundits have consistently listed Castro as a possible candidate for president in 2020.

“The thrust of Opportunity First will be to support people who are running in the 2018 cycle. I’m happy to do it,” Castro told the Tribune, when asked if Opportunity First is about laying the groundwork for a presidential run.

Castro didn’t deny, though, that Opportunity First could be used to lay the groundwork for a possible presidential run in 2020.
