2020 Watch: Steyer Says He Won’t Run as an Independent

Liberal billionaire Tom Steyer, who has been barnstorming across the country this summer as part of his “Need to Impeach” campaign against President Trump, addressed his own political future during an interview with Concord Monitor on Wednesday.

Since Steyer launched his $40 million “Need to Impeach” campaign against Trump, political pundits have speculated that Steyer is laying the groundwork for a possible presidential run himself.

“Until Nov. 6, 2018 happens, we are totally focused on that day, on creating as much grassroots movement as possible,” Steyer told the Concord Monitor about his political future.

But Steyer added that after the midterm elections he was going to be 100-percent focused on social justice in the United States.

Steyer has repeatedly dodged questions about his own political future, but did shed a little more light on it in his interview with the Concord Monitor, saying he would not run as an independent if he were to run.

“I could not see joining an independent run with someone who’s considered to be a moderate Republican like John Kasich, because as far as I’m concerned the kind of vision that we need is what is now considered a progressive vision. I strongly believe that,” Steyer said.
