2020 Watch: Tom Steyer to Hold Debates in Democratic Primaries

Billionaire environmentalist and Democratic donor Tom Steyer’s political organization, NextGen America, announced that it will be hosting over a dozen Democratic primary debates throughout the summer on Wednesday.

The group, which already announced that it will spend at least $30 million to help elect Democrats to the House in 2018, will hold “15 Democratic primary debates in House and gubernatorial races across the country,” in an effort dubbed “Keeping up with the Candidates.”

According to NextGen, debates are already scheduled for Pennsylvania’s seventh and fifth congressional districts, and in California’s 39th Congressional District.

Steyer told BuzzFeed News that these debates would target millennial voters, and attempt “to make it easier for young voters to get a sense of who the candidates are.”

These debates will also be used to help local progressive groups fundraise, and could help NextGen decide who they will endorse in Democratic primaries.

NextGen America also has tentative debates planned for Nevada’s Fourth Congressional District, New Hampshire’s First Congressional District, and tentative gubernatorial debates in Michigan, Wisconsin, and Florida.
