223K U.S. Jobs Added in May; Unemployment Rate Lowest Since April 2000

The U.S. economy added 223,000 jobs in the month of May, beating expectations by about 35,000 and marking the second-strongest jobs month of 2018 so far.

The 223,000 total could not beat February’s 324,000 jobs added – the strongest jobs month of 2018 so far – but is the second-best of 2018 to date.

The unemployment rate fell to 3.8 percent, also beating expectations.

The last time the unemployment rate was as low as 3.8 percent was April 2000. If the unemployment rate sinks below 3.8 percent in future months, it will be the lowest unemployment rate in America since 1969.

The U.S. has now created 2.97 million jobs in 16 months under President Trump’s watch, an average pace of about 2.23 million jobs per year. The president has pledged to create 25 million jobs in the next 10 years.
