35 Protestors Storm the DNC Demanding They Reject Fossil Fuel Money

Roughly 35 protestors with the Sunrise Movement showed up at the Democratic National Committee (DNC) headquarters in Washington, D.C. on Wednesday demanding that the DNC reinstate its ban on donations from fossil fuel companies.

Last week, the DNC announced it would reverse its ban on donations from fossil fuel companies, a decision that drew backlash from progressive groups across the country.

The Sunrise Movement is focused on stopping climate change, according to the group’s website. The Sunrise Movement posted an hour-long video of the protest on their Facebook page.

At the start of the video, one of the organizers points out that the DNC seemed to know they were coming because the put up barricades preventing the protestors from entering the building.

“So, they put up barricades to block us out of the building,” a protestor said. “We already kind of feel that our voices are blocked out of the Democratic Party because of their decision to undo the fossil fuel money ban.”

A DNC representative later came out to explain that the barricades were in place as a safety precaution.

Eventually the DNC’s interim CEO Mary Beth Cahill came out to talk with the protestors and agreed to allow them into the building to discuss their issue.

The meeting between the protestors and the DNC lasted more than 40 minutes and was at times intense, with the DNC staff defending its decision and the protestors adamantly disagreeing.
