4 Important Upcoming Dates for the Kavanaugh Nomination

Now that Judge Brett Kavanaugh’s marathon, four-day confirmation hearing is over, only a few more steps stand between the D.C. circuit judge and a lifetime appointment to the highest court in the land.

Republicans who support Kavanaugh are looking to put the judge on the bench before the Supreme Court’s new term begins on October 1.

Here are a few dates that matter between now and then.

  • Thursday, September 13: The likely day the Senate Judiciary Committee will try to vote Judge Kavanaugh out of committee. There are 21 members on the committee – 11 Republicans and 10 Democrats – and Kavanaugh needs 11 Republicans to advance to the Senate floor.
  • Thursday, September 20: If Senate Judiciary Democrats seek a week-long extension on Kavanaugh’s nomination – and they are highly likely to seek such an extension – this will be the new date for a committee vote on Kavanaugh.
  • Friday, September 28: This is the last day the full Senate could vote on Kavanaugh’s nomination to realistically put him on the bench before the Supreme Court’s new term starts. Expect a full Senate vote sometime in the week leading up to September 28.
  • Monday, October 1: The Supreme Court begins hearing oral arguments on this day.

It’s a tight series of deadlines for Kavanaugh and for the Senate Republicans supporting him, but Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley (R-IA) and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) are intent on putting Kavanaugh on the Supreme Court before October 1. Buckle up for a busy few weeks in the U.S. Senate.
