71% Give Trump Credit for Strong U.S. Economy

A majority of Americans who say the economy is “very” or “fairly” good give President Trump either most or partial credit for the state of the economy.

That’s one of the results of a new CBS News poll. Nearly one-third (32 percent) say President Trump is “mostly” responsible for the good state of the American economy, and an additional 39 percent say Trump is “partially” responsible.

The results are also consistent with a Gallup poll, released last week, that found American optimism about the economy hit an all-time high in 2017.

Despite the credit voters give Trump for the economy, his approval ratings are low when compared to his predecessors. Trump finished his first year in office with a high approval rating of 43 percent and a low approval rating of 35 percent. Presidents Obama (68 percent), Bush (90 percent), and Clinton (64 percent) all had higher highs, and higher lows as well.

Still, if the economy continues performing the way it did in Trump’s first year, he can claim credit for its success if and when he runs for re-election in two years.
