Another week, another list from a D.C. publication of top U.S. Senate races this election cycle. And another list, another highlight of the challenges national Democrats face in retaking the U.S. Senate in 2018.

Republicans currently hold a narrow, 51-49 advantage in the U.S. Senate. They went into the Trump presidency with a 52-48 lead, but lost a seat in 2017 after Alabama Republicans picked the unelectable Roy Moore to represent the party.

Despite a tough midterm cycle, though, Politico shows eight of the top 10 Senate races in 2018 currently being held by Democrats:

  • #2: Indiana (Sen. Joe Donnelly)
  • #3: Missouri (Sen. Claire McCaskill)
  • #5: North Dakota (Sen. Heidi Heitkamp)
  • #6: West Virginia (Sen. Joe Manchin)
  • #7: Florida (Sen. Bill Nelson)
  • #8: Wisconsin (Sen. Tammy Baldwin)
  • #9: Montana (Sen. Jon Tester)
  • #10: Ohio (Sen. Sherrod Brown)

The map may get tougher for Democrats as time goes on. As Politico noted, the Nevada seat held by Sen. Dean Heller (R-NV) – Politico‘s #1 Senate race – may be more likely to stay in Republican hands now that “businessman Danny Tarkanian, at the urging of Trump, dropped his primary challenge and decided to run for Congress instead.”

And in the #7 race, Florida, the GOP looks likely to get their top recruit: Gov. Rick Scott (R-FL).

All told, as 2018 shapes up, it may become tougher, not easier, for Democrats to retake the U.S. Senate – or to even gain a seat.
