Rep. John Conyers (D-MI) announced that he will retire from Congress, effective immediately, during a radio interview Tuesday. Conyers’ retirement comes after several former female staffers accused Conyers of sexually harassing them through the years.

The Detroit Free Press reported on Monday about another former female staffer of Conyers’ office, Marion Brown, alleging that Conyers “once slid his hand up her skirt in church.”

“I am retiring today. And I want everyone to know how much I appreciate the support, the incredible undiminished support I’ve received across the years from my supporters, not only in my district but across the country as well,” Conyers said on Tuesday.

The New York Times reported earlier in the day that Conyers would not resign from Congress, insisting instead he would choose to not seek re-election in 2018.

Ian Conyers, who is the grandson of John Conyers’s brother, has expressed interest in running for Conyers’s seat, and told the Times that Conyers is resigning because of his health and not because of the accusations of sexual harassment.

“He is not resigning. He is going to retire,” Ian Conyer told the Times. “His doctor advised him that the rigor of another campaign would be too much for him just in terms of his health.”

Conyers was briefly hospitalized in Michigan for unknown medical reasons, following several reports detailing how Conyers used taxpayer funds to settle sexual harassment accusations with former staffers.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), along with other Democratic leaders, have called on Conyers to resign from Congress after the allegations against him came to light. By retiring from Congress instead resigning, it would appear that Conyers is unable to admit any wrongdoing.
