Admin Rolls Back Obama-Era Mileage Standards, as CO Dems Embrace CA

The White House is easing vehicle-mileage standards established under President Obama. Colorado is moving in a more liberal direction, thanks to Gov. John Hickenlooper (D-CO).

On Thursday, the Trump administration begins the process of rolling back stringent Obama-era vehicle standards, which Axios reported Thursday morning “underscores [the] broader problem facing Democrats and their environmental allies [of less leverage over the EPA now].”

EPA’s plan to weaken vehicle standards underscores a broader problem facing Democrats and their environmental allies: They have little leverage against the man now leading the agency compared to his predecessor.

EPA and the Transportation Department are floating draft rules today that would dismantle Obama-era vehicle mileage and carbon emissions regulations.

…One option under consideration is to freeze the standards at 2020 levels while revoking California’s waiver to set tougher emissions rules that roughly a dozen other states follow.

Environmental groups and liberals may have leverage over one purple state, though: Colorado.

Gov. John Hickenlooper (D-CO) just adopted California-style vehicle emissions standards by executive order. NTK Network noted in June:

Gov. John Hickenlooper (D-CO) is taking Colorado vehicles on a sharp left turn in his final months in office, signing an executive order on Wednesday that compels the state to adopt California’s vehicle emissions standards by the end of the year.

…There’s also the possibility that Hickenlooper’s executive order is about more than just the environment. His adoption of California standards could be a valuable talking point on the presidential trail in 2020, especially as he and other potential candidates mine for campaign cash on the nation’s left coast.

And the Republican Governors Association (RGA) just released an ad arguing Rep. Jared Polis (D-CO) – the Hickenlooper-supported Democratic nominee to replace Hickenlooper as governor – wants to further make Colorado more like true-blue California.

While the administration in D.C. is rolling back tight regulations, it appears Colorado could become a safe haven for environmental liberals – especially if Hickenlooper’s man, Polis, is elected this fall.
